When you buy a Patrice Rushen album, you know exactly what you’re getting! Lead single “Forget Me Nots” and “I Was Tired Of Being Alone” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. Straight from the Heart isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. Smart music for smart people.
It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: I Was Tired Of Being Alone, which shows, blatantly, how much Patrice Rushen has evolved as a singer. All We Need as a highlight of Straight from the Heart contains a ton of excellent melodies. Although I prefer the faster paced music, I think Number One (Instrumental) is my favorite song on Straight from the Heart. Where There Is Love - This one is what it is: a powerful, primal invitation to love. Breakout! one of the most beautiful songs i’ve ever heard. If Only is amazing and different song. Remind Me is a song to enjoy for years to come. Music in (She Will) Take You Down To Love is marvelous as in all tracks of Straight from the Heart. Forget Me Nots (12′ Version) is a great song for a cosy night in when it’s cold and wintry outside. Breakout! (12′ Version) is the first taste of the new album. Simple and heartfelt closing track Number One (Instrumental) (12′ Version) closes Straight from the Heart on a high note. Forget Me Nots (Single Version) has a beautifully haunting disco flavor. When I listen to Breakout! (Single Version) in my car when traffic ain’t going so good.
