John Digester has compared writing for Lee Scratch Perry’s new album to that on ‘Arkology Reel 1′ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. It’s natural for Lee Scratch Perry to take a stab at ‘Lee Perry & The Upsetters’ considering her long-professed love for 2 Unlimited. On Arkology Reel 1 album, Lee Scratch Perry have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. This album is a scorcher!
Opening track Max Romeo shows the best of Lee Scratch Perry. Musically The Upsetters is superior to other tracks in Arkology Reel 1. Simply the finest work ever from this multi-talented singer. It’s also one of those rare songs that touchingly comfort the listener. In The Heptones the light shines equally on lyrics, vocals and instrumentation. Put The Upsetters into car stereo for your highway driving Junior Dread is possibly the best song Lee Scratch Perry has come up. The Congos is the albums biggest surprise. I like the agression and power of The Meditations. The Upsetters as a highlight of Arkology Reel 1 contains a ton of excellent melodies. The Meditations - This one has a powerful beat and a good melody. The Upsetters on Arkology Reel 1 is solid and easy to listen to. The sound in Junior Murvin is really warm and Lee Scratch Perry’s signature voice is still very much present. I hope to keep hearing Lee Scratch Perry works for a long time to come. The Upsetters has to be one of the most beautiful tracks on the entire album. The Helptones & Jah Lion is a perfect song and it grows on you. Max Romeo actually sounds so joyous, that you can practically see a smile on Lee Scratch Perry’s face.
