Self-described as Chanson with lots of words, Johnny Hallyday comes out swinging on perhaps his best album to date. Johnny Hallyday had quite a long carriere and they made many hits. Lead single “J’la Croise Tous Les Mati” and “Ca Ne Change Pas Un Homme” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. Ballades is not something you should pass up.
Ca Ne Change Pas Un Homme is a romantic if not formulaic ditty. The song feels complete. Noel Interdit one of the best in my collection. Guitare Fait Mal make listening to Johnny Hallyday like being in some sort of time warp. Although Essayez is very melodic it is far from sad. Prends Ma Vie is the albums biggest surprise. Fille Aux Cheveux Clairs is nothing short of a modern masterpiece. Song Laura is actually a funny song. This is one of those songs that musicians strive to write and create. Mirador is a catchy, up-tempo track that has influence of music streams without leaning too much in that direction. Ne M’oublie Pas is the first taste of the new album. Put Cet Homme Que Voila into car stereo for your highway driving This track is possibly the biggest guilty pleasure on Ballades. Penitencier - This one is lively and fun. Retiens La Nuit is one of those songs that will put you in a good mood. Aimer Vivre is a very catchy tune. L’hymne A L’amour (4:37) - Oh, this is one of my favorites! Simple and heartfelt closing track Ne Me Quitte Pas closes Ballades on a high note. Je Te Promets has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets Johnny Hallyday’s strong vocals come to the fore. Si J’etais Un Charpentier had me crying as I was able to relate so well. This song has very few things relative to that of it’s predecessor. In Elle M’oublie full palet of sound is used by Johnny Hallyday to accentuate the presentation. Album opener Comme Si Je Devais Mourir is a bright, upbeat ditty. Petite Fille De L’hiver defines beauty, yet is as unforgiving as an astringent stone. This is one hell of a track. This song is dynamic and dramatic. Ne Pour Vivre Sans Amour is just a great song and one well worth taking the time to give it a good listen. J’oublierai Ton Nom is flawed, nonetheless pretty good song. Ce Que Je Sais without a doubt is the standout song of Ballades. Que Je T’aime (3:22) Not one of my favorites, but for a lot of people this is one of their best songs. Chanteur Abandonne is one of the best records ever. I listened to the opening track Quand Ca Vous Brise Le Co and liked it a lot. Requiem Pour Un Fou is a song that will not reduce you to tears but leave you thinking long after Ballades have ended. First time I heard L’idole Des Jeunes was on radio driving in my car and sonically it just sounded amazing.Get Ballades and turn on Derriere L’amour if you are going to sip your wine late at night. Sur Ma Vie is exquisite and different song.
