It has been ten years Victor Manuel’ last studio CD, “Ana, Serrat, Rios - El Gusto Es Nuestro” which won Array Grammy Awards and was nominated for album of the year. While no new Victor Manuel album is in sight, the artist has been road testing new songs during 1997 tour in Africa. Lead single “Fiesta” and “Himno de la alegria” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. Such great and happy songs.
In Himno de la alegria Victor Manuel spins a tale you want to hear to the end. The song feels complete. Simple and heartfelt closing track Paraules d’amor closes Ana, Serrat, Rios - El Gusto Es Nuestro on a high note. Although La locomotion is very melodic it is far from sad. La Plaga is Victor Manuel’s best work in years. Estremecete had me crying as I was able to relate so well. Strong, powerful vocals of Victor Manuel in Cantares are very impressive. I listened to the opening track Quiero abrazarte tanto and liked it a lot. Cuelebre - To me, this is the best song on the Ana, Serrat, Rios - El Gusto Es Nuestro. This track, in particular, has the kind of undeniably catchy flavor. Blues del autobus is sonically very melodic with nice haunting verses. Me’n Vaig A Peu - My least favorite song on this album. Espaca camsisa blanca de mi esperanza is perhaps one of the best tracks of the past decade. Victor Manuel sings Contaminame in such a comforting, confident voice that you can’t help but be moved. |titile| is quite refreshing and sets the tone for what is going on in Ana, Serrat, Rios - El Gusto Es Nuestro. Cruzar Los Brazos is probably the highlight of the album. After about the third Penelope listen through, I began to believe this song is Victor Manuel’s essence. Get Ana, Serrat, Rios - El Gusto Es Nuestro and turn on El Rio if you are going to sip your wine late at night. Victor Manuel allows each song to breathe and flourish. This is one of those tracks that should not be judged after the first hearing.
