Rum, Sodomy and The Lash isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. There is no doubt that The Pogues has talent. This disc has all of the essential The Pogues classics. Oh yes, this album gets Array out of Array
The Old Main Drag - This happy song is an ode to optimism and an anthem. Wild Cats Of Kilkenny is a amazing, simple song by The Pogues at the top of his game. This is one hell of a track. In A Pair Of Brown Eyes the music gets its power. Some of the arrangements found on Rum, Sodomy and The Lash are surprisingly edgy. This is the kind of song I think of when I think of The Pogues. Dirty Old Town is flawed, nonetheless pretty good song. Jesse James is a song to enjoy for years to come. Voice and instruments in Navigator complement each other. Billy’s Bones is sonically very melodic with nice haunting verses. Still going through Rum, Sodomy and The Lash and coming to appreciate The Gentleman Soldier more and more with every listen. The Band Played Waltzing Matilda is a pleasing, and full of overall coherence that goes beyond other creations.
