While no new Merle Haggard album is in sight, the artist has been road testing new songs during 1995 tour in Europe. five years ago, Merle Haggard briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “You Don’t Even Try”. After seeing Sing A Sad Song, I had to have a good Merle Haggard cd. Cool, but I like their other actual stuff better like Untamed Hawk CD1.
You Don’t Even Try is outstanding work of Merle Haggard. Life In Prison (False Start) as a highlight of Untamed Hawk CD1 contains a ton of marvelous melodies. Life In Prison has to be one of the most beautiful tracks on the entire album. This song is dynamic and dramatic. Don’t judge Sam Hill on the first listening. Awesome song is really all that you can say about it. Please Mr. D.J. is a nice, innocuous song, and much better than anything Merle Haggard released so far. I’d Trade All Of My Tomorrows is perfect. Musically (My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers is superior to other tracks in Untamed Hawk CD1. Slowly But Surely (& Bonnie Owens) great lyrics, dark, deep, angry and cool.In Just Between The Two Of Us (& Bonnie Owens) Merle Haggard is at his best. This song stands out greatly from the others. Falling For You is just simply stunning. I Wanta Live Again - This one is lively and fun. A House Without Love Is Not A Home is nothing but pure genius. I like the idea behind Walking The Floor Over You. The opening track The Worst Is Yet To Come is very much like you would expect from other albums. Piedras Negras (Go Home) is absolutely incredible. Singin’ My Heart Out - This happy song is an ode to optimism and an anthem. Skid Row is an upbeat song with a constant snare hit. Falling For You (Without String Overdub) is kind of track that compels you to skip back and drink it in one more time before moving on through Untamed Hawk CD1. I’d Trade All Of My Tomorrows (Without String Overdub) is a great song to contemplate the modern music and what it really is all about. Blew our minds when we first heard If I Had Left It Up To You. As always, Merle Haggard’s lyrics are worth listening to again and again. Stranger In My Arms (& Bonnie Owens) is simply excellent. Music and lyrics of If I Could Be Him creates, for me, fertile ground for daydreaming. Charming song, great melody. Within the first few notes of This Town’s Not Big Enough it’s perfectly clear that Merle Haggard is living this song.
